Christmas in Polignano

Christmas traditions in the land of Domenico Modugno

When you think of Polignano a Mare, what comes to mind are the strains of "Nel blu dipinto di blu," the long cliff, and the little houses of the historic center overlooking the sea. Few people associate the image of this Puglian town with Christmas traditions. Yet, the residents of Polignano have always loved the magical atmosphere of these festive days.
During the December days, walking through the alleys of the historic center, it is easy to smell the scents of Christmas preparations in the homes of the people of Polignano: the sasamelle and the cartellate ( desserts prepared with almonds and cooked wine) are a must, as are, for the savoury, capitone and the combination of cotechino and lentils at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day, for good luck.

But there are also non-culinary traditions: you can't give up the great family bingo games. And it's not just any bingo, but the inimitable Polignano Tombola , where each number corresponds to a dialect expression. It's fun to play, brushing up on the very language of this town to which everyone feels deeply connected.

And to top it all off, the most magical experience has been the one you can have, for a few years now, gazing at the famous Lama Monachile, which during the holidays is "painted blue," to fully experience Christmas in Domenico Modugno's hometown.
