Melograno: l’oro rosso della Puglia

Pomegranate: Puglia's red gold

In Puglia, the pomegranate enjoys a privileged status, so much so that it can be defined as red gold.

The Taranto area is renowned not only in Puglia but throughout Italy for its pomegranate production, accounting for 70% of the regional and 40% of national consumption. The fruit originated in Iran, but thanks to favorable climate conditions, it also grows in the countryside of Grottaglie, Castellaneta, Ginosa, Massafra, and Fragagnano, covering an area of 400 hectares. This fruit has gained an increasingly important place on the market, becoming a veritable business. Puglia supplies 60% of the national pomegranate production.

The Wonderful variety, later renamed Acco, thrives in Puglia; this is thanks to the favorable climate, the presence of two seas, and the extensive coastline. Annual production of these varieties can reach 40 tons per hectare.

As for their beneficial effects, there are truly numerous reasons to consume them. Being rich in antioxidant polyphenols, they are useful in fighting cancer, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, and soothing skin conditions. They are a natural anti-inflammatory, and the presence of natural fatty acids promotes cell regeneration, repairing the skin and proving effective against aging.

Ellaic acid, found naturally only in this fruit, helps fight bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiac arrest and stroke. It has also been shown to be beneficial in fighting breast cancer, stabilizing mood, increasing bone strength, and protecting against UV rays.
