The Dauni Mountains

The Dauni Mountains are located in the province of Foggia, in northwest Puglia, and are part of the Italian Apennine mountain range. They comprise 30 municipalities and have a population of 90,000.

The Dauni Mountains are a very precious environment: they count for a lot four "most beautiful villages in Italy" And Seven Orange Flag municipalities . The four most beautiful villages in Italy, located in the Daunia mountains, are Alberona, Bovino, Pietramontecorvino, and Roseto. These are small towns of great historical and artistic interest. Indeed, the distinguishing feature of these four villages is their beauty: it almost feels like visiting open-air museums with their churches, castles, and palaces. Alberona, for example, is a small village ideal for hiking and walking. This village is considered the place of a hundred fountains, precisely because it boasts numerous small waterfalls.

The village of Bovino, on the other hand, was once inhabited by the Dauni and then by the Romans. It is an idyllic place and you cannot miss the Cerrato cellars , an underground monument containing a Roman-era cistern. Pietramontecorvino is also a village with a sixteenth-century feel. This village is particularly known for its Devil's Chair . Roseto is instead characteristic for its water mills , it is right here, in fact, that one of the first water mills dating back to 1338 is preserved.

Additionally, seven municipalities in the Dauni Mountains have received the Orange Flag: Alberona, Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, Orsara di Puglia, Troia, Bovino, Sant'Agata di Puglia, and Pietramontecorvino. This award is tied to tourism, cultural, and environmental quality and is given to inland municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants.

The Dauni Mountains also boast numerous culinary delights. Among the many products this area offers, there is undoubtedly the craft beer , so prized because it is not subjected to microfiltration or pasteurization. Another excellence is the Capocollo : a sausage made from the meat of pigs born and raised in the local area. The typical desserts of this region are also exquisite, such as cartellate , a crunchy sweet with the typical smell of cooked wine.
