Cherries from Puglia

The Puglia countryside produces a delicious, fresh fruit: cherries.

Apulian cherries have a juicy, sweet pulp that delights both adults and children—it's impossible not to love them! Besides being delicious, they're also packed with health benefits: they're rich in vitamins C and A and have purifying, antioxidant, and detoxifying properties.

The harvest takes place between May and June and each cherry can weigh between 8 and 20 grams, depending on the variety. In fact, in Puglia there are different types of cherries depending on the production area.

The best-known variety is the " Ferrovia" cherry , widely grown in Turi, a small town in the province of Bari and the home of cherries. In fact, every year Turi hosts a cherry festival. The Ferrovia cherry stands out from other varieties for its dark red color, firmness, and particularly juicy flesh.

Other types of Apulian cherries are the “ Giorgia cherries ”, the “ Bigarreaux cherries ” and the “ Lupinis cherries ”.

One thing is certain, all the varieties found in Puglia are excellent, which is why they are also used to prepare desserts and jams.

Furthermore, Apulian cherries reach the tables of families from southern to northern Italy, and are loved and sought after throughout the peninsula: a true source of pride for the Apulian land!
